Winterlude 2027 runs from Friday, January 29 to Monday, February 15, 2027: three weekends of free ice sculptures, snow slides and winter fun on both sides of the Ottawa River.
Winterlude is Ottawa-Gatineau's free winter festival, and its 49th edition takes place January 29 to February 15, 2027, ending on Ontario's Family Day. Admission to the official sites is free. Snowflake Kingdom fills the northern part of Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau with snow slides and family games, Crystal Garden in Confederation Park shows the ice sculptures, and the Rideau Canal Skateway opens if the ice allows. A free Sno-Bus links the sites on weekends. Canadian Heritage usually posts the daily schedule in January, so this guide uses the 2026 edition to show what to expect.
For everything about the ice itself, from access points to rentals, see our Rideau Canal skating guide. To warm up between sites, the ByWard Market is a short walk from Confederation Park.
Key Highlights
TL;DR: Winterlude 2027 runs January 29 to February 15, 2027, over three weekends that end on Family Day. Entry to every official site is free; most activities are free too, and a few carry a fee. Winterlude 2027 Dates and Hours

Canadian Heritage has confirmed the dates: Winterlude 2027 runs from January 29 to February 15, 2027, its 49th edition. January 29 is a Friday and February 15 is Family Day in Ontario, so the festival follows its usual pattern of three consecutive weekends, the last one stretching to the holiday Monday. Site hours and the activity calendar are normally published in January, a few weeks before opening.
Until then, the 2026 edition (January 30 to February 16, 2026) is the best guide. Hours varied by day and by site, and the organisers warned that they "may change due to weather".
| 2026 Hours | Crystal Garden (Confederation Park) | Snowflake Kingdom (Gatineau) |
|---|---|---|
| Thursdays (weekends 2 and 3) | Closed | 9 am to 2 pm |
| Fridays | 4 pm to 9 pm | 4 pm to 9 pm (opening night), then 9 am to 9 pm or 10 pm |
| Saturdays | 10 am to 9 pm | 9 am to 9 pm (10 pm on weekend 2) |
| Sundays | 10 am to 6 pm | 9 am to 6 pm |
| Mondays (Feb 9 and Family Day) | Family Day only, 10 am to 6 pm | 9 am to 6 pm |
Which weekend? Opening weekend has the freshest ice sculptures but shorter Friday hours. Family Day Monday brings school-age crowds and the most activities on the calendar. If you want space, go early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, or try a Thursday at Snowflake Kingdom if it opens again in 2027.
How Winterlude Grew
The National Capital Commission created Winterlude in 1979, a year after a one-day winter celebration in Ottawa drew a few hundred people to watch a bed race. It became three consecutive weekends in 1994, and Canadian Heritage took over the festival after the NCC's last edition in 2013. In 2019 the ByWard Market, Sparks Street, Downtown Rideau and the Glebe joined as festival destinations, and in 2026 Crystal Garden returned to Confederation Park for the first time since 2018. Today the festival draws, on average, more than 500,000 visitors and relies on about 600 volunteers.
Winterlude Sites in Ottawa and Gatineau
Winterlude has two official sites, one on each side of the Ottawa River, plus the Skateway and a ring of partner events downtown. Most visitors pick one main site per outing and add a skate or a meal nearby.
| Site | Where | Best For | Plan For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snowflake Kingdom | Northern part of Jacques-Cartier Park, Gatineau | Families, slides, games | A half day |
| Crystal Garden | Confederation Park, downtown Ottawa | Ice sculptures, evening lights | 1 to 2 hours |
| Rideau Canal Skateway | Downtown to Dow's Lake | Skating, BeaverTails | 1 to 3 hours |
| ByWard Market and Sparks Street | Downtown Ottawa | Partner events, food, warming up | 1 to 2 hours |

Snowflake Kingdom (Jacques-Cartier Park North, Gatineau)
Snowflake Kingdom is the official Winterlude site in Gatineau, set in the northern part of Jacques-Cartier Park with its main entrance on Laurier Street. It is the festival's big snow playground: slides, games, a live stage and, new in 2026, a Ferris wheel. Entry is free, there are heated areas and washrooms on site, and pets are not allowed (service dogs are welcome). There is no parking on site, so plan to arrive by Sno-Bus, STO bus or drop-off. The activities are covered in detail in the next section.
Crystal Garden (Confederation Park, Ottawa)
Crystal Garden returned to Confederation Park in 2026 for the first time since 2018. The park sits beside the Rideau Canal Skateway and a short walk from Parliament Hill, which makes it the easiest Winterlude site to reach from downtown hotels and the O-Train. It hosts the free outdoor ice sculpture exhibition, ice-carving demonstrations and evening light installations; see the ice sculpture section below for the 2026 line-up.
Practical points from the 2026 edition: entry was free, paid food and drink concessions were nearby, heated areas and washrooms were on site, and lost-children services and first aid were available at the park.
Rideau Canal Skateway
The Rideau Canal Skateway runs 7.8 kilometres from downtown to Dow's Lake and is free to skate whenever the NCC opens it. It is not a Winterlude site in the strict sense, because the NCC runs it and the ice decides the season, but in most years it is open during the festival and Crystal Garden sits right beside it. Skating details are in the Skateway section below.
Sparks Street and the ByWard Market
Since 2019, downtown districts have joined Winterlude with their own programming. In 2026, Sparks Street hosted "DJs Live from the Booth" between Elgin and Metcalfe streets, plus an interactive light installation, while the ByWard Market ran street curling, buskers, workshops, a vendor market and horse-drawn rides, along with the Pibòn Festival of Indigenous art, music and heritage. These partner events change each year, so check the official calendar in January. Both areas sit on the Sno-Bus red circuit, which stopped at Sparks and Elgin and at the ByWard Market in 2026.
Snowflake Kingdom Activities
Snowflake Kingdom is where families spend the most time at Winterlude, and in 2026 every activity on its calendar was listed as a free event. Food is the main cost. The 2027 line-up will be announced in January, but the core attractions have been steady for years.

| 2026 Activity | What It Is | Good To Know |
|---|---|---|
| Tim Hortons Chinook Super Slide | The big snow slides | Open during site hours |
| The Big Ferris Wheel | Winterlude's first Ferris wheel, about 50 feet high, with views of the slides, both rivers and downtown | Free in 2026; ran into the evening |
| Winterlude Maze | A snow labyrinth | Open during site hours |
| Flurry and Mini Flurry | Foam-ball "snowball" games run by facilitators | Flurry needs a height of at least 120 cm; Mini Flurry needs a parent |
| Ice Dig and Ice Mosaique | Kids dig prizes out of a block of ice, or build a mosaic of coloured ice | Weekend daytime |
| Intro to downhill skiing and snowboarding | Free lessons for ages 5 to 8 with the Quebec Ski Area Association | Daytime, set dates |
| Winter kicksled, lacrosse, snow snake, tug of war | Try-it sports, including the Indigenous snow snake game | Weekend daytime |
| Kids Zone, Musical Igloo, live stage | Small igloo play area, music workshops and family shows | Times vary |
| The Ice Hogs' Walkabout | Meet Winterlude's mascots, the Ice Hog family | Set days |
A few pointers from the 2026 schedule: most games ran from about 10 or 11 am to between 2 and 5 pm, so arrive in the morning if you want to try several. The Ferris wheel and slides kept running into the evening on Fridays and Saturdays. In 2026, two Afterslide Evenings for teens and young adults kept the park open until 10 pm with DJs and tube sliding, organised with Igloofête and the Commission jeunesse de Gatineau.
Skating the Rideau Canal During Winterlude
The Skateway is the NCC's 7.8-kilometre rink on the Rideau Canal, free and open 24 hours a day whenever the ice is safe. The season usually runs from January to early March; in 2025–26 it opened on December 31 and closed on March 4 after 56 skating days, a season that spanned all of Winterlude 2026. That is not guaranteed, and a mild week can close sections, so check the NCC ice report (updated each morning and afternoon) on the day you go.

| Skateway Basics | Details |
|---|---|
| Cost | Free |
| Closest access to Crystal Garden | Rideau and Mackenzie King West access points, downtown |
| Rest areas | Rideau, Concord, Fifth and Bronson, with heated change rooms and washrooms |
| Rentals | Capital Skates at the Rideau and Fifth rest areas; reserve and pay online, deposit required, no rentals after 8 pm |
| Food | BeaverTails at every rest area in 2025–26, plus coffee and food stands at Concord, Fifth and Bronson |
| Not allowed | Pets (service dogs excepted), hockey sticks and pucks, bikes, skis and snowshoes |
During Winterlude weekends the downtown end near Confederation Park is the busiest stretch. Families who want more room often start at Fifth Avenue or Dow's Lake instead. If you skate one way, the O-Train stations near the access points make the trip back easy. Our full Rideau Canal skating guide covers every access point, the ramps, rest-area hours and safety rules.
Ice Sculptures at Crystal Garden

Ice sculptures are a pillar of Winterlude, and in 2026 the exhibition moved back to Crystal Garden in Confederation Park. The Ice Sculpture Exhibition, presented by Tim Hortons, showed twelve pieces, each carved by a pair of sculptors, and visitors could vote for a favourite. Ice-carving demonstrations ran on the second and third weekends, usually late morning and mid-afternoon, and the Ryan Hill Ice-Carving Public Challenge let visitors try carving alongside professionals. More sculptures were placed around downtown Ottawa, marked on the festival's online map.
After dark the park changes character. In 2026, Lantern Grove filled the trees with large lantern sculptures from 5 to 10 pm, and Glacialux turned the sculpture tent into a light-and-sound show on the evenings of the second and third weekends.
| When to Go | What You Get |
|---|---|
| Late morning on weekend 2 or 3 | Carving demonstrations and sharp detail in daylight |
| Late afternoon | Soft light for photos before the evening crowd |
| After 5 pm | Lit sculptures, lantern installations and the light show |
| Opening weekend | The freshest ice, before sun and wind soften the edges |
Photography Tips for Ice Sculptures
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Bring extra batteries | Cold drains batteries quickly |
| Use portrait mode | Creates depth with bokeh |
| Shoot low angles | Dramatic perspective |
| Return at night | Colourful lighting on the ice |
| Wear thin gloves | Better camera control |
Getting to Winterlude: Sno-Bus, Transit and Parking

The one rule worth remembering: there is no parking at Snowflake Kingdom. Plan to arrive there by shuttle, STO bus or drop-off at the entrance on Laurier Street, and save the car, if you bring one, for a downtown lot.
Free Sno-Bus Shuttle (2026 Routes)
The Sno-Bus is free. Canadian Heritage publishes the routes each January; in 2026 there were two Saturday-and-Sunday circuits plus a Family Day run. Frequency could change with the weather, and only some shuttles were wheelchair accessible.
| 2026 Circuit | Route | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Robert-Guertin Park-and-Ride (St-Rédempteur Street, Gatineau) to Snowflake Kingdom's main entrance on Laurier Street | Saturdays 9 am to 9 pm, Sundays 9 am to 6 pm |
| Red | Snowflake Kingdom to the ByWard Market via Sparks Street at Elgin (the Confederation Park stop) | Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 5:30 pm; Family Day 10 am to 3 pm |
The blue circuit is the answer for drivers heading to Gatineau: park at Robert-Guertin and ride in. On the two 2026 Afterslide Evenings it ran until 10 pm.
Public Transit
From Ottawa, the O-Train Line 1 stations closest to Crystal Garden are Parliament and Rideau. For Snowflake Kingdom, STO routes 31 and 67 connect Ottawa and Gatineau, or walk to the Sparks and Elgin stop and take the red Sno-Bus. For trip planning, call OC Transpo at 613-560-5000 or use its online planner.
Driving and Parking
Downtown, the festival pointed drivers to paid parking at the National Arts Centre, the Rideau Centre, World Exchange Plaza, and Ottawa City Hall and other City-run lots. A limited number of accessible spaces were available in paid lots around Confederation Park. Saturdays fill first, so arrive before late morning or come by transit.
Accessibility Notes
Universally accessible portable toilets were provided at both Confederation Park and Snowflake Kingdom. Snowflake Kingdom is covered in natural and compacted snow, and the organisers warned that access "may be difficult depending on weather conditions". Service dogs are welcome on all sites. On the Skateway, the NCC runs five universal access ramps (Rideau, Bronson, Mackenzie King West, Holmwood and Dow's Lake Pavilion), and its change rooms and washrooms are accessible. For specific needs, contact the Ottawa Visitor Centre at 54 Elgin Street (613-236-0044 or toll-free 1-844-878-8333).
What to Wear: Winterlude Weather Preparation
Winterlude falls in one of Ottawa's coldest stretches of the year, and almost everything happens outdoors. Dressing well is the difference between a short, chilly visit and a full day out.

Essential Layering Strategy
| Layer | Purpose | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer | Moisture-wicking | Thermal underwear, synthetic fabrics |
| Middle layer | Insulation | Fleece, wool sweater, down vest |
| Outer layer | Wind/water protection | Insulated, windproof jacket |
| Accessories | Extremity protection | Hat, gloves, scarf |
Complete Packing Checklist
| Category | Items |
|---|---|
| Clothing | Insulated waterproof boots, warm hat, mittens/gloves, neck gaiter, thermal underwear |
| Protection | Sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 30+, lip balm |
| Comfort | Hand warmers, toe warmers, extra dry gloves |
| Kids | Extra mittens, waterproof snow pants, face balm |
| Photography | Extra batteries (cold drains them), thin gloves for controls |
Reading the Forecast
Late January and early February are deep winter in Ottawa, and the open spaces at Winterlude, from the canal to the hilltop at Jacques-Cartier Park, catch the wind. Check Environment Canada's forecast and wind chill the evening before, plan indoor warm-up stops, and on the coldest days keep outdoor stretches short. Midday is usually the mildest part of the day for young children; evenings, when the sculptures are lit, are the coldest.
Tips for Families and First-Timers

Winterlude is one of the best-value family outings of the Ottawa winter: the sites are free, and in 2026 every Snowflake Kingdom activity was free as well. The trick is timing. Arrive when a site opens on a Saturday or Sunday morning, before the slides and games get busy, and expect the biggest crowds on Family Day Monday. In 2026 Snowflake Kingdom also opened on two Thursdays (9 am to 2 pm), a quiet option for preschoolers if it happens again.
Matching Activities to Ages
| Age Group | Good Fits (Based on the 2026 Programme) | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Toddlers (2 to 4) | Kids Zone igloo and snow play, Ice Hog mascots, the Ferris wheel with a parent | 2 to 3 hours |
| Ages 5 to 8 | Super Slide, maze, Ice Dig, the free intro to skiing and snowboarding | Half a day |
| Ages 9 to 12 | Flurry foam-ball games (120 cm minimum), lacrosse, kicksleds, a skate on the canal | Half to a full day |
| Teens | Crystal Garden at night, the Skateway, evening events such as 2026's Afterslide Evenings | An afternoon and evening |
Toddler-Specific Tips
Visiting Winterlude with toddlers requires extra preparation but delivers magical winter memories:
| Consideration | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Nap timing | Plan around naps—arrive for 9am, leave by 1pm |
| Warming breaks | Every 30-45 minutes in heated stations |
| Stroller vs carrier | Carrier better for snow; strollers work on packed paths |
| Snacks | Bring favourites; festival food lines long for hungry toddlers |
| Bathroom access | Locate portable toilets immediately upon arrival |
| Slide safety | Follow the staff's age and height rules at each slide, and stay close to little ones |
Family Survival Checklist
| Category | Essential Items |
|---|---|
| Clothing extras | 2 pairs dry gloves, extra socks, backup mittens |
| Warmth | Hand warmers (6+), toe warmers, face balm |
| Fuel | Snacks, water bottles, thermos with hot drink |
| Comfort | Waterproof pants, snow boots, neck gaiter |
| Entertainment | Camera, portable charger, extra batteries |
| Safety | First aid basics, emergency contact info |
| Convenience | Cash ($50+), backpack for extras |
Strollers, Lost Children and First Aid
Snowflake Kingdom sits on natural and compacted snow, so a carrier or a sled is often easier than a stroller once you leave the main paths. Both official sites had lost-children services, first aid and lost-and-found boxes at the information kiosks in 2026; the Volunteer Centre handles lost items afterwards (819-956-2626). A tip borrowed from the NCC's Skateway advice works anywhere: tuck a card with your phone number in your child's pocket and take a photo of them when you arrive.
Remember that pets are not permitted on the Winterlude sites or on the Skateway (service dogs excepted), so leave the dog at home; our dog-friendly Ottawa guide has other winter outings.
Budget Tips
The festival itself costs nothing, so spending comes down to food, transport and rentals. Bring your own skates if you plan to use the canal, pack snacks and a thermos, and use the free Sno-Bus instead of paying for downtown parking.
Partner Events Across the Capital

Beyond the two official sites, the Winterlude calendar fills up with events run by partners across Ottawa and Gatineau, from museums to neighbourhood business groups. Some are free and some are paid; the official calendar marks paid events with a dollar sign. The 2027 list will appear in January, but these 2026 examples show the range.
| 2026 Partner Event | Where | When (2026) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create and Celebrate (street curling, buskers, workshops, vendor market, horse-drawn rides) | ByWard Market | Weekend 3 (Valentine's Day and Family Day) | Free to attend |
| Pibòn Festival of Indigenous art, music and heritage, by the Assembly of Seven Generations | ByWard Market | Opening weekend, January 30 to February 1 | Free to attend |
| DJs Live from the Booth | Sparks Street between Elgin and Metcalfe | Weekends | Free |
| Rideau Hall's Winter Celebration, with skating on the Rideau Hall rink | 1 Sussex Drive | February 7, 12:30 to 4 pm | Free |
| Igloofête, a family winter party with DJ workshops for kids | Place des Festivals Zibi, Gatineau | Weekends | Free |
| Gatineau Loppet cross-country ski races (2 to 50 km) | Gatineau Park and Mont-Bleu High School | February 13 to 15 | Free to watch; racers register with the Loppet |
| Family Day skating party with on-site rentals | Ottawa City Hall | February 16, 11 am to 2 pm | Free (rentals extra) |
| Life under Snow and Ice | Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod Street | Weekend mornings and afternoons | Paid |
For indoor backup plans on the coldest days, our guide to winter museum activities in Ottawa covers the national museums near the festival sites.
Igloofest Gatineau
For adults, the evening counterpart to Igloofête is Igloofest, the ticketed outdoor electronic music festival at Place des Festivals Zibi (60 Jos-Montferrand Street, Gatineau). In 2026 it ran three nights during Winterlude's third weekend, from 7 to 11 pm, and appeared on the Winterlude calendar as a paid event. Dress as if you will be standing outside for four hours, because you will. Our Ottawa nightlife guide has indoor options for the rest of the night.
Valentine's Day During Winterlude
February 14 falls inside the festival most years; in 2027 it is the Sunday of weekend 3. Crystal Garden after dark and a slow skate on the canal make an easy free date, and our best date night restaurants in Ottawa guide covers dinner afterwards. Book early: Valentine's Day and Family Day share a weekend in 2027.
Insider Tips: Timing, Photos and Warming Up

Beat the Crowds
| Strategy | Why It Works |
|---|---|
| Arrive when a site opens | Slides, games and the Ferris wheel are quietest in the first hour |
| Split the day by site | Do Snowflake Kingdom in the morning and Crystal Garden after dark, when the lights are on |
| Use the Thursday or non-holiday Monday | In 2026 Snowflake Kingdom opened on two Thursdays and one ordinary Monday, when schools were in session |
| Plan around Family Day | The holiday Monday (February 15 in 2027) draws the biggest family crowds |
| Skate away from downtown | Fifth Avenue and Dow's Lake usually have more room than the stretch beside Confederation Park |
Photography Tips for Winterlude
| Subject | Best Time | Camera Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Ice sculptures | After 6pm | Long exposure for lights |
| Snowflake Kingdom | 10am-2pm | Fast shutter for action |
| Canal skating | Golden hour | Wide aperture for bokeh |
| Parliament backdrop | Sunset | HDR mode |
| Lantern and light installations | After 5pm | Steady hands or a small tripod |
| Family portraits | 11am-1pm | Natural light optimal |
Cold Weather Camera Care:
- Keep spare batteries warm in pocket
- Allow camera to acclimate before shooting
- Use lens hood to prevent snow on lens
- Bring microfibre cloth for wiping
- Protect equipment when entering warm spaces (condensation)

FAQ
Q: What are the dates for Winterlude 2027?
Winterlude 2027 runs from Friday, January 29 to Monday, February 15, 2027, according to Canadian Heritage. It is the festival's 49th edition and follows the usual three-weekend format, with the last weekend ending on Ontario's Family Day. Daily site hours and the activity calendar are normally posted on canada.ca in January.
Q: Is Winterlude free?
Yes. Admission to every official Winterlude site is free, and in 2026 all of Snowflake Kingdom's listed activities, including the Ferris wheel and the big slides, were free events. Some partner events, such as museum workshops or Igloofest, are ticketed, and the official calendar marks them with a dollar sign. Food, rentals and parking cost extra.
Q: Where is Snowflake Kingdom and can I park there?
Snowflake Kingdom is in the northern part of Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau, with its main entrance on Laurier Street, across the river from downtown Ottawa. There is no parking on site. Use the free Sno-Bus from the Robert-Guertin Park-and-Ride or from downtown Ottawa, STO routes 31 or 67, or drop-off at the entrance.
Q: Is the Rideau Canal Skateway open during Winterlude?
Usually, but it depends on the ice. The NCC opens the Skateway only when it is safe and posts conditions twice a day. In the 2025–26 season it opened December 31 and closed March 4, so it was in season for the whole festival. Check the NCC ice report on the morning you plan to skate.
Q: Can I bring my dog to Winterlude?
No. The official Winterlude sites do not permit pets, and the NCC does not allow dogs or other pets on the Skateway. Service dogs are welcome at both. If your dog needs a winter outing, choose a leash-friendly trail away from the festival crowds and keep visits short on very cold days, since paws suffer on salted and icy paths.
Q: How do I get from downtown Ottawa to Snowflake Kingdom?
In 2026 the free red Sno-Bus circuit ran on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5:30 pm (10 am to 3 pm on Family Day) between the ByWard Market, Sparks Street at Elgin and Snowflake Kingdom. STO buses also cross the river. The 2027 Sno-Bus schedule will be posted on the Winterlude website in January.
Final Thoughts
Winterlude 2027 brings three more weekends of ice, snow and outdoor fun to both sides of the Ottawa River, from January 29 to Family Day, February 15. The festival is free to enter, the 2026 edition showed how much a family can do without spending anything at Snowflake Kingdom, and Crystal Garden's return to Confederation Park put the ice sculptures right beside the Skateway again.
